stargirl

DC’s Stargirl, an action packed teen superhero drama, wrapped up its first season in 2020, and it was renewed for a second season that is set to premiere later this year. The creator of the original comic and television series, Geoff Johns, has been busy with the show and his new comic, Geiger, and it was recently announced that Stargirl was picked up for a third season.

Let’s take a look back at what happened in the first season.

1. Courtney Whitmore Becomes Stargirl

The show starts out with high school student named Courtney Whitmore moving from her seemingly perfect life in Los Angeles to a small town called Blue Valley in Nebraska. Her family moves because her mother, Barbara Whitmore, marries Pat Dugan, and they decide to relocated back to Pat’s home town.

At first, Courtney struggles with leaving her old life behind, especially with her mom’s marriage and her new stepbrother, Mike Dugan. She doesn’t make friends at school as easily as she had hoped, and Nebraska takes some getting used to.

One night, Courtney goes through Pat’s belongings and disovers a staff that seems to have powers. There are other powerful tools and items among Pat’s things, and Courtney later discovers that Pat used to be a sidekick to a superhero named Starman. Courtney learns to control the staff, and she sews herself a costume to become Stargirl.

2. Courtney Forms an Alliance

Courntey eventually befriends a formerly popular girl named Yolanda Montez, a bad boy named Rick Tyler, and a quiet girl named Beth Chapel. She convinces them all to join forces to take on the villians around Blue Valley, and they all take on their respective alter-egos of Wildcat, Hourman, and Dr. Mid-Nite.

3. Villans Began to Wreak Havoc

The main adversaries in Stargirl are the powerful Icicle and malicious Brainwave, both of whom have sons at the same high schools as Courtney and her friends. Icicle, or Jordan Mahkent, wants to make the world a better place with his Project New America idea, which would force everyone to convert to his set of ideals and beliefs.

Icicle has the ability to create freeze blasts and ice attacks, and he can create a protective layer around his body. Despite these powers, he is killed toward the end of season 1, and his awful plans are destroyed.

Brainwave, or Dr. Henry King Sr., is a neurosurgeon in Blue Valley, and he has telepathy and telekinesis powers that allow him to control objects with his mind. Brainwave works with Icicle to bring their project to live, but he is also thwarted at the end by Wildcat.

Season 2 Premise

Not much is known about season 2, other than the fact that it will feature Nick Tarabay as Eclipso and Jonathan Cake as The Shade, presumably the two main adversaries Stargirl and company will face. Eclipso is first introduced at the end of season 1 when we see Cindy, or Shiv, hold up a diamond and laugh maniacly when she calls it Eclipso.

You can stream season 1 on Amazon Prime, HBO Max, YouTubeTV, and The CW.
