It has been the competition and innovation war going between the two telecom major companies BSNL and Reliance Jio. The latest among those is the fiber services technology launched by the two. In response to the Reliance Jio’s announcement of Jio Gigafiber service. India ISP PSU has now come up with new unlimited BSNL FTTH plans 2018 upto 100Mbps download speed.

Fiber to home is a technology which has been launched for the first time by BSNL in India. The fiber connectivity offers unlimited bandwidth and state of the art infrastructure and technology that would help in providing high speed broadband services in the range of 256 kbps to 100 Mbps. The technology also will assist in Internet protocol television which will help in different type of contents like HDTV, 3D TV and range of voice telephony services.

The fiber to home services provides comprehensive solution for various services like:

  • IP leased line
  • Internet
  • Closed User group
  • MPLS-VPN
  • VoIP
  • Video Conferencing
  • Video calls etc.

The fiber to home technology will help in accessing all the services available on the internet, on –demand bandwidth can be provided through this service without any change in the home device or the access fiber.

Customer will also get a CPE which is called as Home optical network termination which consists of 4*100 Mbps Ethernet ports and 2 normal telephone ports. Each 100 Mbps ports will provide broadband, IPTVs, IP video calls and leased line etc. whichever service is required by the customer. Customer will also get a power back unit which will provide a full backup of 4 hrs. and a normal back up of 3 days. This power backup will be AC input and connecting to HONT on 12V device.

The connection for the fiber to home service will be provided by BSNL for the nearest central office of BSNL directly or with the help of franchises. BSNL will also install HONT and battery backup at the customers identified center. The service would be enabled at the customer location based on the requirement and customer’s request.

The initial launch of fiber to home by BSNL was done in the month of June in Kolkata. The scheme was launched as a counter measure of Reliance Jio’s entry into fiber networks. The initial plans launched in Kolkata included the launch of two tariff plans:

  • The first plan was of Rs 777 offering 500 GB monthly data plan at a speed of 50 Mbps
  • While the second plan was offered at Rs 1277 per month which offered 750 GB data at a speed of 50 Mbps.

The plan also provided unlimited voice calling to any of the networks. Both these new plans come up with one month validity. The launch of the BSNL fiber to home will not only help fight the launch of Gigafiber by Reliance Jio but will also help fight the competition from local Internet service providers such as Spectra net and ACT fiber net. The fiber to home plans comes up with unlimited voice calling to any network across the country. The plan is applicable across all the telecom sectors of the country except Andaman and Nicobar. The schemes is applicable to new fiber to the home users and require a one month deposit from the subscriber.

The Initial plan which is for Rs 777/ broadband plan comes with a speed of 50 Mbps till the usage of 500 GB of data and after that the speed will reduce to 2mbps. The data limit in the plan is itself huge as well as the speed that one gets after the usage of allowable limit is also good. The subscriber can also switch to long term plans as well for one, two or three years at charges of Rs 8,547, Rs 16,317 and Rs 23,310 respectively. The second plan of monthly Rs 1277 also comes with a extended 1, 2 and 3 year options at a price of Rs14,047, Rs 26, 817 and Rs 383,10 respectively.

BSNL’s close rivals Airtel and Reliance Jio have also launched services in the fibernet space.

Airtel currently offers a speed of 40 Mbps which is lower than the speed that BSNL offers while the data limit in their plan is 150 GB which is far lesser compared to the data limit that BSNL offers of 500GB. This plan of Airtel comes at a monthly rental of Rs 500 per month and similar to BSNL provides unlimited Local and pan India voice calling to any of the networks.

While Reliance Jio, though is an older player in the fibernet space but the telecom major currently operates in the broadband sectors a beta service. The Jio fiber is currently available only in the selected cities in India but not Pan India. But soon they would be expanding their services to pan India.

However, recently BSNL has revised its plans in the Fiber to the home service sector. BSNL has launched four of its services in the premium category segment. The offerings are priced at Rs3,999, Rs 5,999, Rs 9,999 and Rs 16,999. These plans will have increased download speed. The 3,999 plan will offer a speed of 60 Mbps and 750 GB of data and after the data usage the speed will lower down to 4 Mbps. While 5,999 plan will offer 1,250 GB of data at 70 Mbps speed.

Thus with all the changes and telecom players having stiff competition, it is the customer who is ultimately going to get the benefits.
